STEBoot - Medium Resolution Desktop Saver for TOS 1.6 STE's
Files: STEBOOT.PRG, STEBOOT.RSC
One well known 'undocumented feature' (ie bug) on the original
STE was the problem of the machine not booting up in medium
resolution. Atari released an auto folder patch fairly quickly,
and fixed the problem for TOS 1.62, but there are still quite a
few STE owners out there with the older machine and no proper
medium resolution. The Atatri patch works fine, but uses up disc
space, slows down boot up and also gives an error message if the
machine isn't an STE.
The simple solution is to save a high resolution desktop, then
when the machine boots up with a colour monitor it defaults to
medium res - the nearest it can get to high res. Unfortunately,
this is only possible if you have both mono and colour monitors,
or a multisync monitor.
So, here is STEBoot, a program which modifies the DESKTOP.INF
file on any disc so that the machine will try to boot up in high
resolution - and if it can't, you get medium res. This way, you
can modify all the discs you want to have medium res desktops,
and they will stay medium res unless you save the desktop again -
no auto folder, no error messages. Just hide STEBoot away on your
utilities disc until you need to modify new desktops.
STEBoot works by changing the existing DESKTOP.INF file on the
disc selected, so before you run the program set up all the discs
the way you want them, in medium res, and save the desktops. Then
run STEBoot, select the right drive and click on 'Save' for each
disc. STEBoot will modify the desktop on each one, giving a
permanent medium res disc. If the DESKTOP.INF file isn't there
STEBoot will tell you. When you've finished click cancel. To run
STEBoot you need STEBOOT.PRG and STEBOOT.RSC in the same folder,
then simply double click the .PRG file.
I hope people find this useful - I would have sent it in a year
ago, but I didn't realise Atari's patch used the auto folder.
Anyway, there are still just as many people with TOS 1.6 machines
now, since I doubt if anyone traded there machine in when the TOS
1.62 machines came out - having TOS 1.6 adds character anyway!

Every attempt has of course been made to ensure that it is bug
free, but any unexpected behaviour is just an undocumented
feature.
